A Cattleya backbulb
This is a bit hard to categorize. It is a backbulb taken as part of a repotting. It is a year later and it is still unclear that this plant will survive. That is why I am calling it a rescue orchid.

To see the original backbulbs, put the mouse over the picture

If this had been a Sharry Baby or Twinkle I would have just tossed out those old pseudobulbs. But this is a nice species Cattleya from Brazil. It has fragrant lavendar flowers. It is readily available for about $50 including tax and shipping. Not rare, but worth the effort.

Both of the original pseudobulbs have died, and I assume, their roots also. I am not sure since I thought it best to leave it alone. However, there is still hope because the pseudobulb in the picture is a new growth.

I would not be surprised of this were still 3 years away from blooming. This is not a problem. For me, the flowers are not the goal, but rather proof that I have taken proper care of the plant.

A Cattleya walkeriana back bulb still in trouble after a year
In order to make a plant that was being repotted fit in its new pot a little better, the two oldest and smallest pseudobulbs were removed. The had some live roots and it appeared likely that they would develop.
